Amazon Closes Three Checkout-Free Fresh Stores in London

Ealing Broadway Store First to Open in UK

Dalston and Wembley Outlets Also Shut Down

In a sign of the challenges facing the tech giant's grocery expansion, Amazon has closed three of its checkout-free Amazon Fresh stores in London.

The first store to close was the Ealing Broadway location, which opened in 2021 as the chain's first grocery store in the UK. The store was visited by BBC's Emma Simpson when it first opened, but has since been replaced by a new Amazon Fresh location elsewhere in the capital.

Two other Amazon Fresh stores in London, Dalston and Wembley, have also closed their doors this year. The Dalston store was closed earlier in 2023, less than 18 months after it opened.

Amazon has not yet commented on the closures, but it is believed that the stores were struggling to compete with established grocery chains in the UK market.
