Mississippi State parts ways with head football coach Zach Arnett

Arnett fired after just 10 games into his first season

Former Mississippi State defensive coordinator and interim head coach led Bulldogs to a 4-6 record in 2023

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just 10 games into his first season, the school announced Monday.

Arnett, who was promoted to head coach in December 2022 after the death of Mike Leach, led the Bulldogs to a 4-6 record this season. Mississippi State lost its last four games, including a 51-10 defeat to Texas A&M on Saturday.

"We appreciate the hard work and dedication that Coach Arnett and his staff have put in this season," Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon said in a statement. "However, we believe that a change in leadership is necessary at this time."

Arnett, 36, was a rising star in the coaching ranks before being hired at Mississippi State. He served as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator for three seasons before being promoted to head coach.

Mississippi State will now begin a search for a new head coach. The Bulldogs are expected to be interested in a number of candidates, including former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze and current Liberty coach Hugh Freeze.
